Major research areas
<<Specialized field>>
Organic synthetic chemistry; synthesis and research on physiologically active substances such as antibiotics and cytotoxic substances
<<Details of research>>
Penicillin and other antibiotics constitute part of important pharmaceuticals that are indispensable in today's medical scenes. Problems have arisen, however: emergence of resistant bacteria such as MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and VRE (Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci), and widespread hospital-acquired infection. Under these circumstances, we conduct research to synthesize thiostrepton-strain antibiotics that do not easily generate resistant bacteria. We also promote research to develop new reactions using organosulfur compounds.
Other
My hobbies are outdoor sports such as mountaineering, tennis and telemark skiing.
I go out to climb mountains in various parts of Japan in all seasons. I have reached the summits of Mont Blanc, the highest peak of the European Alps (4, 807 m), Elbruz, the highest mountain of Russian Caucasia (5, 642m), Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain of the African Continent (5, 895 m), Mount Kenya (4, 985 m), and Mount Demavand in Iran (5, 671m). I have also climbed Aconcagua in South America (6, 959m), Namcha Barwa in Tibet (7, 782m), Hunza, and Karakorum.
